Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) FAQ

ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent challenges with social communication, restricted interests and repetitive behaviour. While autism is considered a lifelong disorder, the degree of impairment in functioning because of these challenges varies between individuals with autism. Appropriate support can help to improve functioning.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

What is involved with an Adult ASD Assessment?

The total time it takes to complete an assessment and comprehensive written report is approximately 8 hours.

This includes a 3-hour one-on-one clinical interview, 2-3 hours preparing a report, another 1-1.5 hours to score measures and review all the information/documentation, and a subsequent 30-minute telehealth feedback session. The clinical interview will explore aspects of your history and current functioning that are relevant to determining whether you have ASD.

Prior to the assessment appointment, you will receive some initial psychometric questionnaires to complete and it is vital these are completed before the appointment. Further psychometric tests may be used during and/or provided after the assessment appointment as needed.

A request for information sought from significant others such as a family member or partner may be made at the appointment. However, this will only happen with your expressed permission.

How long does it take for the report to be completed?

The turnaround time for the report and feedback session is generally two weeks from the initial 3-hour session but it is dependent on you completing all testing measures and returning any additional requested information in a timely manner. Delays in providing this information will lead to a delay in the completion of your report. Please note the report will only be released once all fees have been settled and delays in payments will delay the report.

The total cost of an adult ASD assessment is $2,500. There are no other hidden costs or surprises. We understand the cost of an assessment can be significant, but the fee reflects the time and expertise involved in providing a thorough assessment.

How much does it cost?

A $500 deposit is required to secure an assessment. This is taken to avoid wait times increasing due to unattended appointments. The deposit will be deducted from your total assessment fee.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

What happens if I need to cancel, reschedule or if I do not attend my assessment?

If you book an assessment and decide not to proceed, the full deposit amount will be refunded to you provided you give at least 2 business days’ notice by PHONING the clinic. We do not accept email cancellations.

For example, if your appointment is on a Tuesday at 2pm, you will need to cancel by Friday 2pm. If you cancel with less than 2 business days’ notice a cancellation fee of $150 will be incurred. If you cancel with less than 1 business day’s notice a cancellation fee of $300 will be incurred.

Are there any Medicare rebates associated with an assessment?

There is no Medicare rebate for an Adult ASD assessment. You may be able to claim some of the costs from your private health insurance, but you will have to personally organise this with your insurer as each insurance cover is different and not everyone is covered.

Do I need a GP referral to have a formal ASD assessment?

You do NOT need a GP referral for a formal ASD assessment as there is no Medicare rebate. However, you will still need to email us to request an assessment via referrals@melbournementalhealth.com.au

This is definitely a possibility. You will be provided with an unbiased assessment to determine whether ASD is relevant. If ASD is not relevant, you will still receive a detailed report and feedback session.

What if I don’t have ASD?

Is ongoing support provided as part of the assessment?

No. The written report and feedback session conclude the formal assessment.

Yes. You may use the written report as you see fit such as sharing it with other health professionals or as part of an application for NDIS funding. Please note that specific assistance with NDIS applications is not provided and there is no guarantee the report will lead to a successful NDIS application. If you have any issues with your NDIS application, you will need to consult with your existing care team.

Can I use my report for an NDIS application?

Not a problem! Please feel free to contact the friendly administrative team via admin@melbournementalhealth.com.au or call on (03) 7002 9610 to discuss further.
